Sign language art-themed Hello Kitty pop up shop opens in Tokyo<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n <\/span><\/p>\n Hello Kitty<\/strong> is always ready to make new friends. Having just taken part in collaborations with the casts of the Evangelion<\/em><\/a> and Sonic the Hedgehog<\/em> franchises<\/a>, the Sanrio star\u2019s newest pal isn\u2019t an anime or video game character, but real-life Japanese artist Hidehiko Kado<\/strong>.<\/p>\n Kado was born to deaf parents and became proficient in sign language<\/strong> from an early age. His desire to express thought and emotions that couldn\u2019t be summed up entirely with spoken words or signing led him to become an artist and establish his own brand, Smile Talking Hands<\/strong>.<\/p>\n On November 6, the Hello Kitty x Smile Talking Hands Pop Up Shop<\/strong> opened in Tokyo\u2019s Shibuya<\/strong> neighborhood. Kado has created a series of new artwork pieces for the project, and they serve as the motif for the merchandise collection being offered. Not only do they combine Kado\u2019s stylish sensibilities with Hello Kitty\u2019s characteristic cuteness, they also teach some very useful sign language<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The first is one you might already be familiar with, as the sign for \u201cI love you\u201d<\/strong> is the same in Japanese and American sign language. The sign for \u201ckonnichiwa,\u201d<\/strong> meaning \u201cgood afternoon\u201d (and sometimes used for \u201chello\u201d in a broad sense), is more indicative of Japanese culture, though\u2026<\/p>\n \u2026since you turn your index fingers towards each other and bend them, so that they \u201cbow\u201d to each other in greeting<\/strong>.<\/p>\n \u25bc \u201cKonnichiwa\u201d in Japanese sign language<\/p>\n VID<\/p>\n Finally, there\u2019s Kitty-chan demonstrating the sign for \u201carigatou\u201d<\/strong> (\u201cthank you\u201d), in which you bring the edge of your right hand down in a gentle chopping motion onto the back of your left<\/strong>.<\/p>\n The Hello Kitty x Smile Talking Hands collaboration will be offering T-shirts<\/strong> with the \u201cI love you\u201d design for 3,250 yen (US$21.50)\u2026<\/p>\n \u2026tote bags<\/strong> with a design that combines all three signs (2,640 yen)\u2026<\/p>\n \u2026as well as stickers<\/strong> (440 yen) and pins (550 yen).<\/p>\n A randomly selected magnet<\/strong> of one of the single-sign designs will also be given to shoppers who purchase 3,300 yen or more worth of items at the store.<\/p>\n The Hello Kitty x Smile Talking Hands Pop Up Shop will be open until November 19, but many of the items can also be purchased online here<\/a>.<\/p>\n Shop information<\/strong> Source: Shibuya Keizai Shimbun<\/a>, PR Times<\/a>, Hidehiko Kado official website<\/a><\/em> Sign language art-themed Hello Kitty pop up shop opens in Tokyo.
