{"id":2999,"date":"2025-11-14T08:00:12","date_gmt":"2025-11-14T15:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/catbradley.io\/?p=2999"},"modified":"2025-11-14T08:00:12","modified_gmt":"2025-11-14T15:00:12","slug":"secret-tourist-stop-in-japan-has-a-lift-car-that-whisks-you-away-to-a-mystery-mountain-destination","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catbradley.io\/?p=2999","title":{"rendered":"Secret tourist stop in Japan has a lift car that whisks you away to a mystery mountain destination"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717258\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-top.jpeg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>If you haven\u2019t visited a Michi no Eki roadside station in Japan yet, you\u2019re missing out.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>A lot has been written about the wonders of <strong>Japanese convenience stores<\/strong>, but for many residents there\u2019s another way to shop that\u2019s arguably even more unique and charming, and it\u2019s called <strong>Michi no Eki<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Literally translating as \u201c<strong>Road Station<\/strong>\u201c, these government-designated roadside rest stops are often found along highways and local roads in rural areas, and they serve multiple purposes: providing rest areas for travellers, offering local information, and supporting regional revitalisation by showcasing local culture and products.<\/p>\n<p>Sometimes you can even stumble upon some surprising extra features, which is what happened to our reporter Maro recently, when she stopped in at <strong>Michi no Eki Minami Kiyosato<\/strong> in <strong>Hokuto City<\/strong>, <strong>Yamanashi Prefecture<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717242\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-4.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Not only did it have a farm-fresh produce section, it also had <strong>a<\/strong> <strong>restaurant<\/strong>, <strong>a dog run<\/strong>, and\u2026<strong>some sort of mysterious rail stretching all the way up the mountain behind it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717257\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"481\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The rail line was steep and surrounded by trees, so from below, you can\u2019t see where it leads to at all. The sight of it stretching towards an unknown destination sparked Maro\u2019s sense of curiosity, so she headed to the \u201cLift Car\u201d boarding point.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717239\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-1.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After paying 500 yen (US$3.23) for the round-trip fare, Maro took her ticket from the machine and pressed the button to request boarding.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717240\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-2.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"479\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The lift car seemed to be somewhere at the summit, but it didn\u2019t take long for her to spot the light blue hues of the lift car reflecting the sunlight as it made its way down the slope towards her.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717241\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-3.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As it approached, Maro was immediately in awe of its presence, while also feeling slightly nervous that the single carriage might spin out of control and slide down towards her. Thankfully, that didn\u2019t happen so she was able to admire the design details, with the words \u201cKoinobori Village\u201d printed above a carp streamer, in honour of the fact that the roadside station is famous for carp streamers.<\/p>\n<p>\u25bc Over 450 carp streamers \u201cswim\u201d in the sky each spring during the annual Koinobori Festival.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717245\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-7.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hopping aboard, Maro took a seat and admired the view as the little car took her up to the mystery destination. After a journey of a few minutes, with the guide explaining things as they went, Maro stepped out at \u201cHigoi Station\u201d at the summit, where she found herself surrounded by glorious flowers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717244\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-6.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was <strong>Minami Yatsugatake Flower Forest Park<\/strong>, and at the plaza right outside the station, red salvias and purple flowers were in full bloom.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717243\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-5.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next to it was a shop where you could eat specialties like stone-oven baked pizza and honey soft serve ice cream.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717246\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-8.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u25bc Maro treated herself to the park\u2019s famous Honey Soft Serve and loved the pronounced deliciousness of the honey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717254\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-16.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>There\u2019s lots to do within the park, including seasonal activities such as digging for sweet potatoes and pressed flower crafting experiences.<\/p>\n<p>\u25bc This mountain-top park is more than a lookout area \u2013 it feels more like a tourist destination.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717247\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-9.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u25bc Both the roadside station below and Flower Forest Park above have ponds with carp and ducks.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717255\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-17.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u25bc The store at the roadside station has loads of dried flowers for sale.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717253\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-15.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The mountaintop views from the flower park make this a beautiful spot to relax and unwind, and young families will appreciate the many wide spaces for children to run around in.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717248\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-10.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As she walked through the park, Maro could hear the sound of a bell ringing intermittently. Looking around, she discovered this was the so-called \u201c<strong>Bell of Hope<\/strong>\u201d located at the top of a lookout deck.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717249\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-11.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to locals, ringing the bell five times while making a wish will grant you your wishes, so Maro did just that, sending out her dreams to the universe.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717250\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-12.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>From the adjacent observatory, you can take in a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains and the roadside station below.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717251\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-13.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The return trip was a bit of a thrill ride, as the steep view as you make your way down is pretty terrifying. The speed may have been slow, but the angle was like a roller coaster, making the descent much scarier than the ascent.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717252\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-14.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>According to the guide on board, this rail\u2019s incline is as steep as a ski jump. It\u2019s a great way to experience the thrilling point-of-view of a skier without having to strap on a pair of skis, and visiting during the autumn leaf-viewing season makes for a colourful journey.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-717256\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2025\/11\/Japan-best-skiing-tourist-site-Michi-no-Eki-Minami-Kiyosato-Koinobori-Village-festival-Japan-Bell-of-Hope-lift-car-Yamanashi-prefecture-Flower-Forest-Park-travel-news-18.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Those wanting a more leisurely journey can access the flower park by walking, which takes roughly 20 minutes.
