However, some of the best bargains are hidden way outside of downtown, out in the countryside-adjacent suburbs of Japan\u2019s sleepy commuter towns. With fancy leisure options fewer and farther between than in the big cities, there\u2019s a voracious appetite among locals for all sorts of entertainment media, including video games, and the result is massive second-hand shops, such as the chain <strong>Guruguru Daiteikoku<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Guruguru Daiteikoku sells used books, manga, trading cards, and even clothing. It was their game selection, though, that brought our Japanese-language reporter <strong>Takuya Inaba<\/strong> to their branch in <strong>Hachioji<\/strong>, on the Tokyo outskirts, More specifically, it was Guruguru Daiteikoku\u2019s <strong>used retro game fukubukuro<\/strong>, or <strong>lucky bags<\/strong>, that had drawn him there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723742\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-2.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Like with the other lucky bags sold by retailers in Japan at New Year\u2019s, each one contains a secret assortment of merchandise, with the promise that the total value of the items is more than the price charged for the bag.<strong> In the case of Guruguru Daiteikoku, though, there\u2019s an additional disclaimer, which says:<\/strong><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><em>\u201cOnly purchase this bag if you\u2019re the sort of person who won\u2019t get upset no matter what\u2019s inside, and who can appreciate the contents as a fun conversation piece. No complaints will be accommodated or returns allowed. Contents may be visually damaged and lacking instruction books.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>\u25bc The disclaimer. And yes, there was a time, not too long ago, when it was accepted as a matter of course that games, when purchased new, would come with instruction books.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723743\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-3.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"476\" \/><\/p>\n<p>When Takuya got to the shop, the staff told him that there\u2019d been a lot of demand for this year\u2019s lucky bags, but there were still four types left. <strong>Each was labeled with the number of games the bag contained and which system they were for, and also bore a mysterious single kanji character designating some sort of theme<\/strong>. Takuya decided to buy one bag for each theme, and once he was back home he started by opening the<strong> \u201cLove\u201d<\/strong> (\u611b) bag, which had cost<strong> 550 yen<\/strong> (US$3.60) and contained eight games for Sony\u2019s original handheld system, the <strong>PSP<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723744\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-4.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Takuya pulled the cases out one by one\u2026and didn\u2019t recognize any of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723745\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-5.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While the phenomenon didn\u2019t necessarily happen overseas, for several years there was a pattern in which handheld video game systems in Japan, in the later years of their lifespans, received tons of female-focused romance games. In the case of the PSP, this coincided with a major surge in the <strong>rekijo<\/strong>, or \u201chistory girl\u201d phenomenon, when women in Japan showed a spiking interest in samurai and other gallant historical figures, and those aesthetics and narrative themes showed up in a lot of the for-girls dating simulators of the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u25bc Some of them, like the <strong>Hakuoki <\/strong>franchise, even had a few titles that saw overseas releases.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723746\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-6.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Next up was the <strong>\u201cConquer\u201d<\/strong> (\u5c04) bag, containing <strong>10 PlayStation 3 games for 1,100 yen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723747\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-7.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Once again, the naming was spot-on, with <strong>seven games from Koei Tecmo\u2019s Warriors\/Muso franchise<\/strong>. Representing China\u2019s Three Kingdoms era of military conflict were <em>Dynasty Warriors 5<\/em>, <em>5 Empires<\/em>, <em>6 Empires<\/em>, while Japan\u2019s Sengoku period is the setting for <em>Samurai Warriors 3 Empires<\/em>, <em>Z 3<\/em>, and <em>4<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723748\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-8.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Developer <strong>Capcom<\/strong> also had a few of its Sengoku-set games in the Conquest bag: <em>Sengoku Basara 3<\/em>, <em>3 Utage<\/em>, and <em>4<\/em>, giving Takuya opportunities to raise an army and crush his enemies\u2019 forces 10 times over.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723749\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-9.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Things got a little more mysterious, though with the <strong>\u201cAri\u201d<\/strong> (\u6709) bag.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723750\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-10.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sure, Takuya knew it was going to contain <strong>five Nintendo DS games for 880 yen<\/strong>, but \u201c<em>ari<\/em>\u201d is kind of a vague concept, with a baseline meaning of \u201chave\u201d or \u201cexist.\u201d <strong>Any confusion, though, was cleared up as soon as Takuya saw what was inside<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723751\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-11.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Mario Kart DS, Yoshi\u2019s Island, and Final Fantasy III<\/strong> are all considered classics by fans around the world, and while puzzle game <strong>Puyopuyo 7<\/strong> and video board game <strong>Momotaro Densetsu DS Tokyo &amp; Japan <\/strong>might not be so famous overseas, in Japan both franchises have huge fanbases. Another meaning of \u201c<em>ari<\/em>\u201d is that something is recognized as being a sufficiently high-quality option, and all five of these games are good, solid fun.<\/p>\n<p>That just leaves the <strong>\u201cGather\u201d<\/strong> (\u96c6) bag, with<strong> six Wii games for 1,100 yen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723752\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-12.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This turned out to be a collection of titles that are perfect for get-togethers with friends and family, regardless of whether or not they\u2019re hardcore gamers.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723753\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-13.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Wii Party <\/strong>and <strong>Mario Party 8 <\/strong>are all about fun, quick mini games that anyone can enjoy and have a chance of winning at, and while <strong>Pok\u00e9Park 2\u2019s <\/strong>main game is a single-player affair, it\u2019s also got a bunch of multiplayer mini games. <strong>Pok\u00e9mon Battle Revolution <\/strong>allows for spirited but light-hearted multiplayer competition too, while <strong>Mario Galaxy\u2019s<\/strong> unique teamwork mechanic allows one player to control the famous Nintendo star while another spots and picks up on-screen collectible items.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723754\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-14.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And last, the bag also had a copy of the<strong> 25th Anniversary Super Mario Collection Special Pack<\/strong>. This contains the original <em>Super Mario Bros.<\/em>, both the Japanese and U.S. versions of <em>Super Mario Bros. 2<\/em>, and <em>Super Mario Bros. 3<\/em>. While none of the games have co-op or simultaneous multiplayer modes, they\u2019re all such influential and popular titles that anyone with any interest in video games at all will want a turn, making them perfect titles for passing the controller back and forth between levels\/lives.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723755\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-15.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>As an added bonus, the soundtrack disc and retrospective pamphlet that were included with early copies of the game were in the bag too, and unsealed to boot!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723756\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-16.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-723757\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/gf-17.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In total, Takuya walked away with <strong>29 games for just 3,630 yen (US$23.75). That works out to a mere 125.2 yen each<\/strong>, or about the cost of a bottle of tea from a vending machine.
