{"id":4145,"date":"2026-01-23T22:00:21","date_gmt":"2026-01-24T05:00:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/catbradley.io\/?p=4145"},"modified":"2026-01-23T22:00:21","modified_gmt":"2026-01-24T05:00:21","slug":"chinas-dont-go-to-japan-warning-looks-to-be-affecting-tourist-crowds-on-miyajima","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/catbradley.io\/?p=4145","title":{"rendered":"China\u2019s don\u2019t-go-to-Japan warning looks to be affecting tourist crowds on Miyajima"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724955\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-1.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span><strong>We head to one of Japan\u2019s top travel destinations to see the situation and take cafe recommendations from a deer<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In November, the Chinese government issued <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/tag\/china-travel-warning\/\">a travel warning to its citizens telling them to avoid travel to Japan<\/a>, the latest episode in the long-running series of China insinuating the question of \u201cSo\u2026what if we decided to invade Taiwan?\u201d and Japan once again replying with \u201cYeah\u2026we would not be cool with that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But while the travel advisory came down swiftly, its effects have been delayed. Independent Chinese travelers who\u2019d already booked flights and hotels weren\u2019t all going to cancel their non-refundable reservations, and so the real impact won\u2019t be something that can be judged until the coming months, with large Chinese tour companies removing Japan travel options from their offerings in response to government pressure to do so.<\/p>\n<p>So roughly two months after the warning was issued, our Japanese-language reporter Natsuno Futon found herself on a boat to <strong>Miyajima<\/strong> in <strong>Hiroshima Prefecture<\/strong>, one of the most famous sightseeing destinations in all of Japan, to take a look at the inbound international tourist situation there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724956\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-2.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Having spent the night at a hotel adjacent to the ferry port on the mainland, Natsuno got on the ship bright and early, just a little before 8 a.m.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724957\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-3.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Actually, make that <em>very<\/em> bright and early, since as the ferry approached the island, the morning sun began rising up from behind Miyajima\u2019s mountains.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724958\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-4.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724959\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-5.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The trip between the ports takes about 10 minutes, and all of the conversations taking place around Natsuno were in Japanese, with no foreign tourists that she noticed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724960\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-6.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Natsuno was visiting on a Sunday in the middle of a three-day weekend, but also as a cold snap was hitting Japan. Between the weather and the early hour, she didn\u2019t see many other tourists out on the streets of the town where passengers get off the ferry, but the local shops and restaurants weren\u2019t open yet either.<strong> The foreign travelers she did encounter were pretty much all Europeans or North Americans, and the one time Natsuno did hear a snippet of conversation in Chinese, she could tell, from her time living in Taiwan, that the speakers were Taiwanese, and not from mainland China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724961\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-7.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This was, by the way, Natsuno\u2019s first time to ever visit Miyajima, and so of course she was going to check out its famous <strong>torii<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724962\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-8.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If you come later in the day, the gateway will be rising out of the sea, but in the morning, at low tide, you can actually walk all the way out to it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724963\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-9.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s a matter of personal taste as to which is more photogenic, but each view has its unique charm, which makes for a good reason to spend enough time on the island so that you can see both of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724964\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-10.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And while there still weren\u2019t too many people out and about, <strong>Miyajima\u2019s famous herds of wild deer were awake<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724965\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-11.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Recognizing an opportunity to have a local guide her around, Natsuno decided to follow along behind one of the animals to see where it was headed<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724966\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-12.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>It ended up leading her to a local restaurant that\u2019s gotten somewhat famous over the years for <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2018\/08\/03\/gang-of-yakuza-deer-regularly-takes-over-japanese-restaurants-street-side-entrance%E3%80%90photos%E3%80%91\/\">how often deer will hang around the entrance<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724967\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-13.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724968\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-14.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Natsuno could smell the scents of cooking coming through the windows as they place got ready to open, which might have been what drew the deer here too. <strong>But since they weren\u2019t serving yet, Natsuno instead slipped into the cafe next door, figuring that this, too, was a recommendation from her friendly deer guide<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u25bc Yes, cheesecake for breakfast. Travel calories don\u2019t count, right?<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724969\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-15.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As she partook of her perfectly sensible morning meal, <strong>Natsuno asked the cafe\u2019s owners about the size of tourist crowds on Miyajima recently<\/strong>. They said that this weekend specifically had been less crowded than a typical holiday one would be, but chalked that up to the very chilly weather, which is a bad match for a primarily walking-around-outside place like Miyajima. When asked about the number of foreign tourists, they that they\u2019ve been having tons of customers from overseas come through their door, but primarily people hailing from western countries. <strong>\u201cRecently, we hardly see any Chinese tourists,\u201d<\/strong> they told her. Overall, though, the increase in customers from other countries has more than made up for the dip in those from China. <strong>\u201cIf we had big tour groups from China coming in to the cafe regularly, it\u2019d actually be more than we handle, probably,\u201d<\/strong> they explained.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724970\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-16.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Snow had started falling while Natsuno was in the cafe, but with it now getting close to 9:30, stores were starting to open up, and so she headed back out to check on the crowds.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724971\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-17.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Walking around town, she started seeing more foreign tourists, including people from the Middle East and Korea, but still hadn\u2019t heard anyone speaking non-Taiwanese Chinese<\/strong>. Stopping by a small tourist information center, she found the most of the people inside getting maps and other information were Japanese.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724972\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-18.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>By now, the snow had stopped and the sun was out again, and the number of tourists quickly increased now that people who had spent the previous night in lodgings farther away from the ferry port had made their way to the island.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724973\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-19.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724974\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-20.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724975\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-21.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>With this being past the Christmas\/new Year\u2019s vacation periods, the majority of the tourists were Japanese.<strong> Out of the foreign travelers, though, Natsuno once again didn\u2019t hear, or otherwise notice, any from China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724976\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-22.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724977\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-23.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724978\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-24.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After pausing for one last snapshot of the torii (now at high tide), Natsuno headed back to the port to catch a boat back to the mainland. There were now so many people that the next departing ship was full and she had to wait for the next one.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724979\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-25.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>On the ferry back, she once again heard travelers from Taiwan talking, but none from China<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-724980\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/mj-26.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As you can see from the photos, Miyajima hasn\u2019t become a ghost town\/island in the wake of the Chinese government\u2019s travel warning, and it doesn\u2019t really seem to be the case that overall tourist numbers are down either, at least not yet.
