Maybe it has something to do with syllable counts and word lengths, as it\u2019s quicker to just say the Japanese word for \u201cmeat,\u201d <em>niku<\/em>, instead of the ones for \u201cbeef,\u201d \u201cchicken,\u201d or \u201cpork\u201d (<em>gyuniku<\/em>, <em>toriniku<\/em>, and <em>butaniku<\/em>, respectively).<\/p>\n<p>In any case, it\u2019s not startling or unnatural for someone to say<strong> \u201cI bought some good meat\u201d<\/strong> without being any more specific, and that\u2019s exactly what our Japanese-reporter <strong>Seiji Nakazawa<\/strong> said to fellow SoraNews24 writer <strong>Ahiruneko<\/strong> the other day while they were both in the office. As a matter of fact, Seiji had procured enough \u201cgood meat\u201d to share, and so <strong>he invited Ahiruneko over to his place for some home-cooked hot pot, an invitation Ahiruneko was glad to accept<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725427\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-2.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seiji lives within walking distance of Shibuya Station, one of the busiest, liveliest neighborhoods not just in all of Tokyo, but in all of Japan. To help Ahiruneko navigate the crowds, Seiji, thoughtful guy that he is, came all the way out to the station to meet him, so that they could walk to Seiji\u2019s place together.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725428\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-3.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725456\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/x-bp-4.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725429\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-4.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>After a few minutes, they were in a neighborhood so quiet that Ahiruneko could hardly believe how close it was to Shibuya Station.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725430\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-5.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>That said, Seiji is still a bachelor living in one of the pricier parts of town, so his apartment\u2019s furnishings are pretty spartan.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725431\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-6.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>For example, <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/?s=seiji+guitar#gsc.tab=0&amp;gsc.q=seiji%20guitar&amp;gsc.page=1\">he\u2019s got multiple guitar stands<\/a>, but <strong>no actual kitchen table<\/strong>. Instead, Seiji eats most of his meals on an overturned packing crate.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725432\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-7.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>Today, though, he had company, which called for a larger, and more luxurious dining arrangement\u2026<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725433\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-8.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026a suitcase on its side with some kind of towel or floor mat draped over it<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>But hey, Seiji said he had good meat, not good furniture, right? As Ahiruneko pondered which side of the suitcase was appropriate for him to sit on, Seiji headed to the kitchenette to put the finishing touches on the hot pot he had simmering there.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725434\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-9.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Seeing that it was ready to eat, Seiji picked up the pot and carried it over to the \u201ctable.\u201d <strong>As he set it down, Ahiruneko peered through the steamed-up glass lid, wondering what kind of meat was waiting inside. Was it beef, chicken, or pork?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725435\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-10.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Wait\u2026what\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725436\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-11.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2026IS THAT?!?!?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725437\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-12.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>None of the animals that Ahiruneko had expected to be on the ingredient list have fingers\u2026or claws, for that matter.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725438\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-13.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>He and Seiji sat there dumbstruck for a few moments\u2026<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725439\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-14.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u2026which was especially strange, considering that Seiji, at least, knew the identity of this mysterious meat.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u25bc Ahiruneko: \u201cDude, like, you\u2019re the one who made this?\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725440\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-15.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>It was only now that Seiji told Ahiruneko what kind of \u201cgood meat\u201d he\u2019d acquired: bear, specifically a bear\u2019s paw<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725441\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-16.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now, if you\u2019re wondering how Seiji, despite living in the middle of downtown Tokyo, got his hands on a bear\u2019s hand, he did his hot pot shopping at <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2026\/01\/14\/we-try-an-unusual-buffet-of-dishes-made-from-wild-game-at-a-roadside-stop-in-chiba\/\">Hunter Works Drive-In, a store and restaurant in Chiba Prefecture that specializes in wild game<\/a> sourced from culling harmful wildlife. While there, Seiji picked up a bear paw for 8,600 yen (US$55).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725442\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-17.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Hunter Works Drive-In partially pre-cooks the paw in a pressure cooker, and <strong>they remove all of the fur too, since that\u2019s not something the average home chef is used to doing<\/strong>. After talking with the Hunter Works Drive-In staff about ways to cook this unusual piece of unusual meat, Seiji decided to <strong>stew it in a pot with soy sauce, mirin (sweet cooking sake), katsuobushi (bonito stock), and ginger<\/strong>. On the day before Ahiruneko came over,<strong> Seiji stewed the paw for three hours, and on this day, he cooked it for another four and half, until the meat had become tender enough that one of the bear\u2019s fingers broke off from the rest of the paw<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725443\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-18.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And now, finally, it was time to taste it.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725444\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-19.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ahiruneko felt a twinge of awkwardness at the contrast of having the opportunity to eat something so unique and it being placed on top of a suitcase. Following a time-tested solution, the awkwardness was dispelled by adding beer to the situation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725445\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-20.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>So how do you eat a bear\u2019s paw, especially if you\u2019re sharing it with someone else?<\/strong> Having looked into serving suggestions, Seiji had read that you can simply slice it with a knife, cutting between the fingers and continuing down to the base of the palm.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725446\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-21.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>And lo and behold, this worked!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725447\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-22.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725448\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-23.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>There\u2019s still the matter of the bone inside, but once you\u2019ve cut off a piece in this manner, you can eat it like you would a sparerib or piece of fried chicken<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725449\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-24.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>As for the taste<\/strong>, bear paw is incredibly gamey. Even after all the time it had spent in the cooking pot, it was unmistakably different from the beef\/chicken\/pork triumvirate of mainstream meats.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725450\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-25.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>The texture, also, is very gooey, almost like you\u2019re eating a chunk of collagen<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725451\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-26.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>If you were going to equate it to a type of meat more people are familiar with, it\u2019s much, much closer to pork than it is to chicken or beef<\/strong>. To put a slightly finer point on it, stewed bear paw, to Ahiruneko, is <strong>reminiscent of the flavor of pork motsu nabe<\/strong>, a traditional Japanese hot pot dish made with pork organs.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725452\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-27.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Overall, it wasn\u2019t unpleasant, and as the meal went on, Ahiruneko became accustomed to the unique scent of the bear meat, and it ceased to be an issue. However, even after he stopped being conscious of the aroma, <strong>at no time during the meal did Ahiruneko forget, even for a second, that he was eating a bear paw<\/strong>. Again, while there are many kinds of orthodox meat dishes in which there might be bones to eat around, none of them have claws at the end of them.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725453\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-28.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-725454\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/01\/bp-29.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"474\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Visually, bear paw isn\u2019t for the faint of heart, but the flavor isn\u2019t intimidating to quite the same degree.
