Once a go-to impulse buy for when you\u2019re feeling too hungry to wait for your next full meal but not ready to have that meal just yet, convenience store rice balls, or <strong>onigiri<\/strong>, as they\u2019re called in Japanese, have <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2026\/02\/26\/japanese-drugstore-sells-onigiri-at-pre-stupid-era-prices-but-how-do-they-compare-to-7-eleven\/\">rapidly risen in price<\/a>, now costing <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2026\/01\/26\/convenience-store-onigiri-rice-balls-become-even-more-expensive-but-are-they-worth-it\/\">double, and sometimes triple, what they did just a few years ago<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>So in this climate, where it\u2019s no longer a given that convenience store rice balls will be a good value for money, the Japanese Internet sighed in disappointment when it saw the tweet from Twitter user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/rekishichosadan\">Shingeki no Gourmet<\/a> below showing <strong>7-Eleven Japan\u2019s onigiri filled with sujiko (salted salmon roe)<\/strong>. There was the whole <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2020\/10\/23\/7-eleven-japans-paper-tiger-sandwich-sparks-online-controversy-over-deceptive-packaging\/\">\u201cpaper tiger sandwich\u201d<\/a> thing from a few years back, plus the deceptive coloring on the cups of its <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2021\/01\/12\/7-eleven-japans-banana-milk-sparks-controversy-over-deceptive-packaging\/\">banana<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/2021\/01\/15\/deceptive-strawberry-milk-package-angers-7-eleven-customers-following-banana-scandal\/\">strawberry milk beverages<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>At 246 yen (US$1.60) each, 7-Eleven\u2019s sujiko onigiri aren\u2019t exactly cheap to begin with, and that price would become really egregious for an almost entirely plain onigiri. <strong>So to get a better handle on what\u2019s going on, we decided to conduct our own investigation, and purchased 10 sujiko onigiri to see if 7-Eleven really is skimping on their fillings so badly<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-728367\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/2_c5f158.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To get a broader sample size, we didn\u2019t source them all from the same store, either. Instead, we hit up four different 7-Eleven branches in our vicinity, getting two or three at each of them. And with an even split among our remaining four rice balls of two with a smaller-than-expected amount of sujiko and two with extra-large portions, things balanced out for us overall.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-728379\" src=\"https:\/\/soranews24.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2026\/03\/16_2c3b12.jpg?w=640\" alt=\"\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>That said, it <em>is<\/em> unusual for there to be this much variance with a store-brand offering from one of Japan\u2019s major convenience store chains<\/strong>, given their reputation for excellent and consistent quality control.
