There have been a lot of special events and surprises this year celebrating Pok\u00e9mon\u2019s<\/strong> 30th anniversary, and the latest one is a new song from singer Masayoshi Oishi<\/strong>. Of course, even if this is a way of singing happy birthday to the Pocket Monsters, some of them are going to have be left out of the lyrics, right?<\/p>\n

Nope. \u201cPok\u00e9mon All-stars 1,025\u201d is, as the title implies, a song about all 1,025 Pok\u00e9mon that have appeared in the series so far, and each and every one of them gets a shout-out in the song<\/strong>. And if you\u2019re thinking there\u2019s no way to condense all that done to the four minutes or so the average anime or video game theme song runs, you\u2019re absolutely right, as the song clocks in at 22 minutes in length<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n

In addition to having its name soulfully sung by Oishi, each Pok\u00e9mon also gets a scrapbook collage<\/strong>. These aren\u2019t CG, either, as each was made by hand<\/strong>, combining images from across Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> video games, anime, card games, and merch.<\/p>\n

\u25bc There\u2019s also a visit to Japan\u2019s Pok\u00e9park Kanto Pok\u00e9mon<\/em> theme park<\/a> at the video\u2019s 18:12 mark.<\/p>\n

Because of how long the song is, it switches musical styles a few times, incorporating pop, rock, jazz, bossa nova, operatic, and even traditional Japanese instrumental influences. The variations help keep the song from getting repetitive, even with its incredible length, and the species alternate between being grouped by Type, evolution family, or rhyming names.<\/p>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Speaking of which. the song uses the Japanese versions of the species\u2019 names, so, for example, you\u2019ll hear Oishi sing Fushigidane (a pun on the Japanese phrase Fushigi da ne<\/em>, \u201cMysterious, isn\u2019t it?\u201d, and tane<\/em>\/dane<\/em>, meaning \u201cseed\u201d) instead of Bulbasaur, and Casey instead of Abra. In that sense, it doubles as a vocabulary primer for talking about the series in Japanese.<\/p>\n

But there\u2019s more to the lyrics than just a run through the Pok\u00e9dex page titles. There\u2019s a recurring chorus, which Oishi says he really put his whole heart into, as he sings<\/p>\n

That\u2019s right, you\u2019re all stars! There are no bit players here!<\/strong><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

Oishi says it was important to him to validate all 1,025 Pok\u00e9mon. After all, the bond between fans and their favorite is often based on something deeper than simple in-game stats or metagame viability.<\/p>\n

Oishi likens the recording process to running a marathon, and says he started crying when he finished. You can hear his voice crack with emotion as he calls out the name of the 1,025th Pok\u00e9mon in the lyrics, Mew<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

\u201cMaybe someday I\u2019ll go back and do a cleaner-sounding rerecording,\u201d mused Oishi, but it\u2019s hard to imagine improving on the emotional journey the song takes listeners on. If Oishi does step back into the recording booth, hopefully it won\u2019t be for a redo, but a sequel, as the video ends with the sound of an ocean breeze\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2026and three blank pages waiting for their collages to be made, a clear nod to the upcoming Pok\u00e9mon Winds and Waves<\/em> games.<\/p>\n
